Smartphones – an author’s friend

The old adage of “I get my best ideas for a story in my dreams” has never been true for me. Nor have I ever been so inspired for a storyline in the shower.

However, I’ll be blunt enough to admit that more than a handful of times I’ve been sitting on the toilet and gotten a sudden ray of literary inspiration.
That being said, I don’t normally drag a notebook in the bathroom with me – so my choices are to either dismiss the inspiration or quickly get done with my business and run for the writing utensils.
With the advent of smartphones with wonderful applets that act like notepads, gone is the need for a frantic change of venue. Luckily I normally carry my phone on me at all times, so all I usually need to do is look on my belt for the phone.
In fact, once you start transcribing – you might find yourself writing a lot more than would seem apropos for the little device.
I should tip my hat to the folks at Apple and other manufacturers of such devices of convenience. Some of us are old enough to remember how impossible such technology would have been not that long ago.
I figure if I find myself jotting down notes on something unusually clever that hits my final draft while in the bathroom – you can imagine others are doing it as well.
Maybe its just me, but I am mildly amused to think that some of the best passages we read might have originated not in a smoke filled room filled with Cheetos and pizza, nor in the hushed environs of a library. They may have originated in a place where we normally hear very distinct flushing sounds.
Thanks,
